Madison-Kipp Wants DNR To Lift Air Pollution Limits: Madison-Kipp is
again asking the Department of Natural Resources to lift its air
pollution limits, but first it has to meet some new air quality
standards.. Read more here. January 31st - Fire at Madison-Kipp: A worker went to the hospital after a fire in a machine at the Madison-Kipp plant on the city's East Side, according to the Madison Fire Department. Read more here. January 30th - Community Car has arrived in Atwood: A fun and fuel-efficient Toyota Yaris is now parked at Trinity Lutheran at the corner of First Street and Winnebago. Read more here. December 1st - The UW Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies releases its report, Starkweather Creek Watershed: Current Conditions and Improvement Strategies in an Urban Context. This report describes the current condition of the 24 square mile Starkweather Creek watershed and recommends options for improving water quality. December 1st - 1st Annual WinnAtwood Winter Festival was held. Businesses between Fair Oaks Avenue and First Street opened their doors live demonstrations, customer appreciation events, caroling, kids activities, story telling, live music and art openings. November 30th - SASYNA held its Neighborhood Meeting & Party at the Atwood Community Center, Swaying to the tunes of the Madison Accordian Group and sharing their favorite snacks, neighbors were introduced to current and aspiring alders for the 6th and 15th districts, heard about the new WinAtwood business association, voted for neighborhood representatives, and learned about upcoming projects including the planning of the Garver property adjacent to Olbrich Gardens and plans for streetcars. November 28th - Drinking well woes still rile east siders at meeting with city water utility. November 14th - Madison city council approves the 2007 budget with funding for quiet zone crossing gates at the Winnebago Street railroad crossings. September 2nd - Second Annual Eclectica Market at Hawthorne Park, Flea market and an art faire with a backdrop of local musicians and dancers performing throughout the day. August 25th - McGrath Associates submitted an update site plan for the Union Corners development project. You can see it at their web site. June 24th - Madison's ordinance prohibiting trains horns was replaced with a federal rule requiring the use horns. The city must install gates at crossings to qualify for a "quiet zone" so horns are no longer needed. June 17th - Neighbors met for the 5th annual Hudson Beach Brat and Lake Weed Fest to cleanup the beach as part of Dane County's Take a Stake in the Lakes program. June 16th - The city Plan Commission approved the following SASY neighborhood projects: 1) Creation of a new Tax Incremental Financing District (TIF District # 37) to include the Union Corners (Rayovac-Kohl's) development, all of Winnebago Street - from Union Corners to the Yahara River, Schenk's Corners Business District, Madison-Kipp, Kupfer Ironworks Building, and Garver Feed Mill building at Olbrich Gardens. 2) Approve demolition of the existing building at the Atwood BP (former Clark) gas station, at Miller and Atwood, and allow construction of a new convenience store on the Miller Avenue side of the lot. 3) Approve demolition of the Bill's Key Shop building at Seventh Street and East Wash, and approve a Greek Orthodox Church plan to build six parking spots there. More info here. May 24th - Lowell Elementary School gets a new principal, Lisa Kvistad, formerly at Elvehjem. More info here. Krupp Construction has started construction on Kennedy Point, a new $10 million 4-floor 42 condo project at the corner of 1st & Winnebago Streets. More info here and at the KP web site here.
