Dane County Regional Airport
The SASY neighborhood lies
directly south of the main runway at the Dane County Regional Airport.
Neighborhood borders are between 1 and 2.5 miles from the airport.
Incoming flights are low enough to read names off the sides
of the plane and cause conversations come to a halt while the noise
subsides.
Besides the obvious environmental impacts on the neighborhood, the
airport
has a significant impact on the economic well-being of the east side of
Madison as it limits future residential development and controls zoning
within
27 square miles. To learn more about airport issues affecting the SASY
neighborhood,

Located in the heart of the SASY neighborhood, Madison-Kipp
Corporation operates an aluminum and zinc foundry and die casting
plant. While an industrial operation has been located at the site
for over 100 years, Kipp
greatly expanded its operations throughout the 1990's. The expansion
significantly
increased the noise and air pollution generated by the foundry. In
response,
hundreds of neighborhood complaints were submitted to the Wisconsin
Department
of Naturals Resources and City of Madison Health Department. Residents
also
turned out to attend public hearings on the air pollution permits which
would approve expansion plants. To learn more of about the Kipp
operations and SASYNA involvement in responses to neighborhood
concerns, visit the

Railroad Traffic, Trains Horns and High-Speed Rail
The City of Madison has railroad tracks
which pass through the narrow Isthmus corridor as they connect the east
and west sides of the city. The railroad tracks and many crossings run
through the SASY neighborhood, most in the backyards of area homes.
Recent increase in the use of the tracks for hauling freight has
resulted in a public outcry due to the use of 96+ decibel train horns
at the crossings. A high-speed rail system was proposed for the
midwest. The anticipated route would take inter-city commuter trains
through the SASY
neighborhood. To learn more about railroad issues affecting the
neigborhood, visit our Railroads and Trains
web page.
